After years of spending WAY too much money on expensive fruit and veggie washes that only left my food feeling waxy and ick, I came up with this 2 ingredient fruit and veggie wash! It’s cheap, non-toxic and super effective at cleaning my fruits and vegetables.
So today’s post is likely one of my shortest but let me tell you, it’s one you definitely want to keep on hand. I have always hated bringing home fruits and vegetables from the store and trying to figure out how to best clean them. Do not laugh, but I even went through a phase of washing my apples with dish soap while I was pregnant because I was so mortified by all the dirt and grime the apple peel carries. Nothing like a Dawn fresh apple to squelch your appetite.
Then I went through a long period of trying out different store-bought fruit and veggie rinses…and I tried a LOT. Aside from the cost (!), I could not stand the waxy feel and annoying after taste all the rinses left on my food.
Ugh…what to do!
Well you know that I LOVE vinegar for it’s gazillion house-hold uses and awesome cleaning ability. So you can imagine this was the ingredient I went straight for!
Now I use a simple, easy to mix 1:1 water and white vinegar combo to wash/rinse all of my fruits and vegetables. For berries, grapes, etc, I fill a large bowl with my fruit and use the vinegar and water combination until the fruit is fully covered.
I usually let it set for 5-10 minutes and then rinse thoroughly in a colander. For especially tender fruits, like raspberries, I only let them soak for a couple minutes so as not to damage the fruit.
And for those fruits and vegetables you don’t soak? – Think apples, cucumbers, squash…I keep my awesome 2 ingredient fruit and veggie wash in a convenient spray bottle. I spray down the fruit or vegetable, let it set for a minute and then rinse it clean!
You are going to be amazed at how much dirt and ick comes off your food! And you will be even more impressed at how MUCH BETTER your fruits and veggies taste!
