After changing countless sheets and beds in the middle of the night, I found these 3 bedtime hacks that will save your sanity! They are so simple yet so life changing, especially as a mom to little ones.
At this point in my life, I have spent over 6 years up in the middle of the night changing sheets, fumbling for new bedding and washing and drying mattress pads at 2 am. Both of my girls have always had a lot of pee at nighttime so leaking diapers, coupled with those awful viral stomach bugs, have made me a self-proclaimed master at all things sheets/mattress/bedding related!
I have honestly tried every trick in the book I can think of to save me from the exhaustion that comes at being woken at 2 am with a crying baby or toddler who has soaked the bed and needs a complete change.
But these 3 tricks, learned over much trial and error, rescued me many, many times!
1. Keep a COMPLETE change of bedding in your child’s room closet – So this is such a no-brainer that it’s an embarrassment I just figured it out last year! What actually prompted me to try it was that my linen closet was overflowing with sheets sets and I was running out of room! I had had enough and took one complete set of the girls’ bedding (sheets, pillowcases, mattress pads, and waterproof pads) and put it in the top shelf of their closet.
Now when it’s the middle of the night, I don’t have to search for anything and maybe more importantly, I don’t wake anyone else up looking!
2. Use QuickZip sheets – This is one of the first things I tell moms to go out and buy! I only wish I had known about it when my first daughter was born. QuickZip sheets are so ingenious! A QuickZip fitted sheet consists of 2 parts – a base part that wraps around the base of the mattress and a top sheet that zips on top.
This is awesome for so many reasons! One, it is a huge timesaver when it comes to changing sheets on cribs, daybeds, or any bed pushed against a wall. For example, my younger daughter has a daybed and it is a PAIN in the YOU KNOW WHAT every time we have to change her sheets. I have to lift the mattress all the way up and cram my hands down into the borders to get the fitted sheet on.
But now that we use QuickZip sheets, I simply unzip the top layer and zip on a new one!
I recently gave my sister a set for her little boy’s converted crib and she loved them as much as I knew she would. Abigail could not believe how much easier it was to change her little boys sheets – no more reaching and pulling to get off dirty sheets and put on new ones!
A QuickZip Sheet set bundle, such as the ones that can be purchased at Amazon or Buy Buy Baby, would make a terrific baby shower gift. I would have loved a set!
They also have organic sets which can be hard to find!
3. Layer, Layer, Layer – Another great tip I have found to be very useful at night is to layer waterproof mattress pads or multi-use pads under the sheets and on top of a waterproof mattress cover.
QuickZip Sheets makes a great waterproof mattress pad that fits perfectly under their top-zip sheet.
Or if you know a particular area that gets soaked first, I put one or two waterproof, multi-use pads (the same kind you would use in a pack n play!) under my QuickZip Sheet. Most of the nights when I have to get up to change sheets, I am able to simply take off my top QuickZip sheet and one of the multi-use pads! That makes it much quicker with a LOT less laundry.
And more importantly, I get to go to sleep sooner!!
